Photography practice- final photograph

Photography practice final photograph

In this project i will be focusing on documentary photography and to do that i decided to walk through the city of Nottingham, stopping and asking people if i could take pictures of them.
I really enjoyed that even if sometimes it wasn't easy because some people would cooperate but some were not keen to my idea.
One of the hardest thing was being quick and be convincing with people, and make them feel comfortable. So first of all i had to interact with them and then set my camera so i could get the perfect light i was searching for.
I decide to shot in black and white because i believe colours sometimes steals the attention from the true emotion of a person and it can be distracting.

In my practice photography project i decided to focus on the documentary photography because i like to capture people and their stories, which i find interesting and fascinating.
I wanted to challenge myself to see if i could interact with stranger and take the best shots of their everyday life.

Documentary photography is a specific kind of photography. It tells a story, it is an expression of reality and it is made to last in time and capture a certain moment in history.
It is different from the street photography because you kind of ask the permission to take pictures and you are allowed to compose your picture, to get the true meaning of the concept.
It is important also because you can interact with the subject of the picture, to have a better knowledge of the situation you want to reflect.

One of the most famous contemporary documentaries photographer is Steve McCurry.
His innovation was to combine the emotion with aesthetic beauty, with a unique eye for natural colours.
His career begun when he visited India, for about 2 years. He shot people, places, events and daily routine of the India's culture.
His mixture of capturing the everyday and the extraordinary is his definition point.
He also took his camera to other parts of the world such as Japan, Europe and American, his own homeland.
His most famous shot is called Afghan Girl, which was published in the National Geographic magazine.
After an attack that killed her parents, Sharbat Gula, a Pashtun girl, was forced to climb the mountains to get to the refugee camp od Nasir Bagh, near Pakistan, with her brother and her grandmother. And it's there where Steve McCurry shot this incredibly beautiful picture.

He is personally one of my favourite photographer ever, because i like how he captures peoples expressions and faces.

Another very famous artist, which i absolutely adore, is Irving Penn.
He was specialised in portrait and fashion photography.
He worked for years for Vogue Magazine, and he is known for his peculiar ethnographic shots, using the simplicity of the black and white.
Also for his still life concepts, showing the perfection and attention to details and the composition.

Here two examples of a still life composition and a fashion shot. Black and white is used to show the simplicity and the power of his subjects which are so strong they don't need any more colours than those.

Photography practice- scientific photography

Photography practice- scientific photography

Photography is still on of the greatest technologies of history and it is still progressing.
Now it is essential in many areas of science.
It is crucial in anatomy, geology, anthropology and zoology.
It does depict things that the human eye is not able to see at all. Like in astronomy, using telescopes, or in other science, through microscopes.
In medicine we have x Rays taken at the hospitals, ultra violet photographs, thermal photography and infrared - which can be used in engineering as well- , which are great innovation and still are advanced technologies which are going to develop even more in the future.

Here are some examples:
  • Ultraviolet

  • X Ray

  • Thermal

  •  Microscopic

  •  Telescopic

Even if the invention of photography was dated in '800, it is still modern, and used in many areas, from the artistic to many aspects of science, and it is still getting better in many ways.

Photography practice-Raw Files

Raw Workflow

By shooting in Raw you save the picture with a minimum amount of data. You can capture with a digital camera and you get all the information from the sensor and it saved immediately  . The name RAW means that there hasn't been any processing to the picture and yet it can't be printed off. You have to open the file to edit it and change its information to get the effect that you desire. The file itself has many positives and negatives.

Positives:
You can control and edit better your image (colour, exposition etc.)
You can modify aspects of the image individually (contrast, highlights, shadows, vibrancy, saturation etc.)
The quality is so much better than JPEG images (because of the sensor of the camera)

Negatives:
It takes tie to edit your images because you can change every thing individually.
The size of the files are loads bigger than the JPEGs, so it will occupy more memory in the camera and in the computer and sometimes that makes the computer slower when you need to edit your images.

Here is an example of a RAW and a JPEG image:

Photography practice-Street photography

Street Photography

Street photography is one of the most pure techniques of photography because it's like putting a mirror into the society, because it reflects the truth and reality, viewed through the photographer's eyes.

I found myself very confident with this photography style because i have no shame in taking pictures in a public place full of people, because i am not afraid of their reaction. I just want to freeze a moment in my camera and i love to caught reality.
I like to take pictures of people because it's like i steal a precious moment of their lives, that will last forever.
Sometimes things go so quickly that we can't take a chance to admire the beauty of the simplicity, the daily normality, the every day life, that goes past everyone of us.

Photography practice-city of motion

City of motion

This one was quite fun to do. I tried to capture everything thought it represent movement and motion, and if i could go back and do it again i would try again and use different techniques to get something a but out of focus, blurred to express the concept of the movement.
